Comcast Data Breach Settlement: Are You Eligible for a Share of the $117 Million Xfinity Breach Fund?

Comcast Data Breach Settlement: Are You Eligible for a Share of the $117 Million Xfinity Breach Fund?

Comcast has opened claims in a $117.5 million settlement linked to the 2023 Xfinity data breach. If you received a breach notice, you may qualify for compensation and should understand what happened.

What Happened?

According to USA TODAY, Comcast agreed to pay $117.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit connected to a data breach that affected Xfinity customers in October 2023.

The lawsuit claimed Comcast did not do enough to protect customer information. Comcast denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement. The claims process is now open for eligible customers.

A final court hearing is scheduled for July 7, 2026. Settlement payments are expected to be issued after final approval.

Who Was Affected and What Information Was Involved?

The settlement applies to current and former Xfinity customers who received a data breach notification from Comcast in December 2023.

According to Comcast, the information accessed during the breach included:

  • Usernames
  • Passwords
  • Contact information
  • Dates of birth
  • Last four digits of Social Security numbers

The company has not publicly shared additional details about other types of information.

Information like names, dates of birth, and Social Security number fragments can be valuable to criminals. It can help make phishing emails, scam phone calls, and impersonation attempts look more convincing.

It is also important to remember that many people have information involved in older breaches without realizing it. Sometimes people only discover their data was affected when suspicious messages or account activity appear later.

How Much Money Can Eligible Customers Receive?

Eligible customers may file claims for documented losses connected to the breach.

The settlement allows reimbursement for:

  • Out-of-pocket expenses
  • Lost time related to dealing with the breach

The maximum payment can be up to $10,000, depending on the documentation provided and the number of approved claims.

People who do not want to submit proof of losses can choose an alternative cash payment of $50. The final amount could change depending on how many people file claims.

The deadline to submit either type of claim is August 14, 2026.

What You Can Learn From This Settlement

Many people think a data breach only matters if financial information was stolen. In reality, criminals often use personal details to build trust before attempting fraud.

Even partial information can help make scam messages appear legitimate. A message that includes your name, email address, or other personal details may seem more believable.

The lesson is simple: when a company notifies you about a breach, take the notice seriously and review your accounts. Acting early can reduce your risk later.
