What Happened?
The investigation began on January 20, 2026, after the manager of an Extended Stay America hotel reported suspicious bookings. Detectives from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office traced multiple reservations to victims across the United States whose personal information had allegedly been stolen and used without their permission.
Johnson was arrested on May 20 and faces multiple felony charges, including identity theft, financial card theft, financial card fraud, obtaining property by false pretenses, and trafficking in stolen identities. He is being held on a $700,000 bond.
How Stolen Personal Information Can Be Used Against You
Investigators said the hotel bookings were connected to victims whose personal information had been stolen. Authorities have not publicly shared how many people were affected or exactly what information was used.
However, identity theft cases often involve information such as:
- Names
- Addresses
- Payment card details
- Account information
- Other personal identifiers
Criminals can use stolen information for much more than hotel bookings. The same details may later be used for fraudulent purchases, fake loan applications, account takeovers, or impersonation scams.
Identity theft can continue causing problems long after the original crime is discovered. Scammers often use stolen information in phishing emails (messages designed to trick people into sharing information), fake phone calls, and other fraud attempts. Many people do not realize their information has been misused until unusual charges or account activity appear later.
